Adolescence

Adolescence
Puberty
The onset of puberty is related to changes in hormone levels that cause growth and sexual maturation. In biological females, estrogens are responsible whereas in biological males testosterones are responsible for the physical changes that occur during puberty. Fluctuations in hormone levels can be related to emotional dysregulation and mood instability during adolescence.

Brain Development
Synaptic pruning continues throughout adolescence, especially in the prefrontal cortex, the region controlling higher cognitive functions, such as processing speed. As this region is still developing and maturing, teenagers are still fine-tuning functions such as inhibition and future oriented planning.
